Oklahoma Greens Announce Results of 2020 Presidential Preference Poll

July 9, 2020 (OKLAHOMA CITY): The Green Party of Oklahoma (GPOK) completed a historic online Presidential Preference Poll to choose how its delegates will vote in the first round of voting at the GPUS Presidential Nominating Convention.

The results of the poll are:

  1. Dario Hunter/Darlene Elias :        34.48%
  2. Howie Hawkins/Angela Walker:   28.73%
  3. None of the Above/Unbound:      18.54%
  4. David Rolde:                                17.24%

“Doing this online poll enabled Greens from across the state to make their voices heard through a ranked choice voting system, in which voters ordered the candidates in their order or preference,” said GPOK member James M. Branum. “We believe that this system eliminates the so-called ‘spoiler effect’ and should be adopted for all elections.”

The results of this poll will be used to fairly distribute Oklahoma’s votes at the GPUS national convention so that the delegate votes cast will proportionally represent the views of Oklahoma Green voters.

“It was fantastic to be able to choose among presidential candidates who share my values of peace and health care access for everyone. The Green Party continues to push forward issues like the Green New Deal to impact national conversations to build a better world for our children,” said GPOK member Kyle Gregory.

Oklahoma Greens to hold Presidential Straw Poll — Polls close at 10 pm CDT on Wednesday, July 8

This straw poll is being conducted by the Green Party of Oklahoma as a way to determine how our delegate votes are allocated. (assuming our pending application for accreditation of delegates is accepted by the national party)

All members of the Green Party of Oklahoma are eligible to vote in this poll, but you must be a member of the GPOK to vote.

And if you are a current or past member, please go ahead and fill out the membership data form (at the same link above) so we will be easily able to confirm you are a GPOK member and eligible to vote in this straw poll.

Privacy notice: Due to the limitations of this form (and the need to confirm party membership) this poll is not truly anonymous (because the straw poll committee will be able to see the votes), however, the data tying individual voters to their votes will not be shared beyond the straw poll committee and will be deleted after the the votes are counted. 2020 GPOK State Convention

This year’s 2020 GPOK state convention will be different than past experiences due to the covid-19 pandemic, as it will take place via multiples sessions via zoom.

Session 1 (July 3, 2020) – At this sesssion we will select our delegates to the GPUS Presidential Nominating Convention. (download minutes here)

Session 2 – TBD (August or September) – At this session we hope to hear from the Green Party’s candidate for president, hear information on our ballot access lawsuit and discuss plans to rebuild our state’s Green party.

Session 3 – TBD (October) – At this session we plan to begin the process of adopting a new platform/legislative agenda for 2021.

The Green Party of Oklahoma is being revived again, so we have turned our website back on. Some of the content is out of date but we hope to update it more in the coming days.

Breitbart: Green/Libertarian lawsuit against CPD could alter election

Jason Scheuer of conservative website Breitbart writes that the antitrust lawsuit filed by the Green and Libertarian parties and their 2012 presidential nominees against the Commission on Presidential Debates “may turn out to be the most important event of the 2016 presidential election.”

“If successful,” he writes, “it will permanently expand the number of candidates on the debate stage during the general election by proving that the Commission on Presidential Debates is in violation of current antitrust law.” In 2012, Green Jill Stein and Libertarian Gary Johnson “were not included in approximately 90 percent of the popular polls,” making it all but impossible for either of them to reach the CPD’s 15% polling threshold or to be reflected as serious candidates by the mainstream media.

Scheuer argues that voter suppression “is about restrictive laws (written by Republicans and Democrats) to prevent anyone but their respective parties from ever showing up on the ballot. Numerous ballot access laws act as barriers to entry but are sold to the public as a way of bringing order and preventing confusion. It sounds fair but, in reality, is far from it. This lawsuit hopes to rectify some of these injustices.”
